Richard Nelson is our earliest proven ancestor in the maternal Mills line. We filed for membership to the Colonial Dames of America using as eligibility his ownership of land prior to 1700. On November 10, 1695, he owned 330 acres of land known as “Cole” or “Coall” in Charles County, Maryland. This property was located on Mattawoman Creek, and was later sold to General William Smallwood, a Revolutionary War soldier. It is now known as Smallwood State Park. In the 1950s, General Smallwood’s manor house and outbuildings were restored and donated to the State of Maryland for use as a public park and tourist attraction.
